Ears surgery
In principle, protruding ears are only a cosmetic problem, they do not impair hearing. They might, however, be troublesome. Individuals with protruding ears are often the focus of ridicule which makes them suffer mentally. In children, the teasing may result in an inferiority complex and cause unnecessary trauma.

Surgery for protruding ears, also known as otoplasty, is the only way to correct the aesthetics of the ears. At Asklepion, we use otoplasty to repair congenital and post-traumatic abnormalities in the shape of the ears, as well as deformations of the ear auricles.

The easiest surgery procedure is “suturing” of the auricle, when some skin is cut from the posterior part of the ear auricle and the ear is suture-fixed closer to the head. The procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia or conscious sedation and takes less than one hour.

In more complex procedures, the surgeon will separate the skin on the entire back surface of the ear, cut the muscles of the auricle and weaken and model the cartilage with a scalpel or rasp, so that the ear looks as good and natural as possible. The excess skin is cut and the ear is suture-fixed closer to the head. During the entire procedure, the surgeon works on the back surface of the ear, so that the scars after the incisions and sutures remain hidden behind the ear. The result must be a symmetrical shape and equal angle of both ears from the head.

The time required for healing and pain perception after the surgery vary according to the individual. The auricle is a tissue that does not heal very easily. According to the doctors’ experience, the ears heal better and are less painful in children, because unlike adults, they do not have a fully developed sensitive nervous system.

The procedure requires responsible compliance from the client, who must treat his/her ears very gently for 2 to 3 weeks, and should wear a fixation headband for 6 to 8 weeks.
