HOW PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE EYELID (BLEPHAROPLASTY) IS PERFORMED

PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE EYELID

It can be performed on the lower eyelids, on the upper eyelids, or on both simultaneously. It is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. Patients choose the procedure for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Heavy eyelids make us look older and can limit our field of vision, making it harder to see. Eyelid surgery is performed most often on patients between the ages of 40 and 50. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. Patients can choose between local anaesthesia or analgosedation, which is not general anaesthesia, but is very comfortable and less burdensome. If you are also bothered by crow’s feet and facial wrinkles, blepharoplasty is only a partial solution; it is better to also apply botulinum toxin or fillers.

PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE UPPER EYELID

The upper eyelids move much more than the lower eyelids; therefore, skin begins to loosen rapidly here, forming a gradually increasing skin overhang. On the upper eyelids, the removal of excess skin results in a feeling of lightening of the eyelids and "brightening and opening" of the eyes. The effect is pronounced and long-lasting. The incision is made in the bend of the eyelid, so the scar is not visible.

PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE LOWER EYELID

The lower eyelids do not experience significant skin movement; the skin here does not typically form large overhangs. However, the problem usually lies with fat prolapses, which form circles or “bags” under the eyes. Timely operative removal of fat prolapses permanently stops swelling and leakage of the eyelids, and even prevents skin excesses from forming on the lower eyelids. The incision is made in the eyelash line, which minimises the visibility of the scar.

RECOVERY

This is an outpatient procedure; you can go home afterwards. The sutures are removed after a week; until then you should stay at home.  Swelling and bruising may occur for the first few days, but don't worry, it will go away. It is also advisable to protect yourself from the sun and wear dark glasses for two weeks outdoors. Avoid activities that strain your eyes or raise your blood pressure. In addition, avoid bending over to keep blood from rushing to your head.

Plastic surgery of the eyelid – blepharoplasty - FAQ

How is upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) performed?
During blepharoplasty, excess skin from the eyelids is removed, and if necessary, fat pockets that create a soft cushion for the eye in the eye socket are reduced. The resulting scar on the upper eyelid is located in the natural crease where the skin folds when open. On lower eyelids, the scar is placed just below the eyelashes. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis or with a one-day hospital stay.
How is lower eyelid surgery performed?
If we perform lower eyelid surgery through the conjunctiva, the lower eyelid is everted. Then, using a laser or radio scalpel, the conjunctiva of the eyelid is incised, and excess fat is removed from all fat bags of the lower eyelid. The conjunctiva is simply covered with eye ointment, and the eye is bandaged. There is no skin incision or other sutures on the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva typically heals within 3-4 days. The surgery must be performed under general anaesthesia because it is done on an open eye that the patient would not be able to keep still and immobile.
